Statement from Protecting Modern Families Coalition on Governor Cuomo’s State of the State Address

State of the State Address Proposes Legalizing Surrogacy

New York, NY – The Protecting Modern Families Coalition today issued a statement on Governor Cuomo’s State of the State proposal that would lift the ban on surrogacy agreements in New York State, otherwise known as the Child-Parent Security Act. This legislation will modernize New York law to support and protect families that utilize assisted reproductive technology, such as in vitro fertilization or gestational surrogacy, to have a family.

“We’re thrilled that Governor Cuomo has recognized the importance of making it easier for all New York families who rely on assisted reproductive technology to become parents by lifting an antiquated ban on surrogacy agreements. This is a tremendous step forward by the Governor to ensure our State’s progressive values are prioritized,” said The Rev. Stan J. Sloan, CEO of Family Equality Council, which works to advance equality for LGBTQ families. “We look forward to working with him to ensure swift passage by the state legislature, along with our tremendous bill sponsors Senator Brad Hoylman and Assemblywoman Amy Paulin.”
