Washington DC – Jan. 9, 2013 – Family Equality Council, the national organization that represents the three million parents in our country who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) and their six million children issued the following statement on today’s decision by the United States Supreme Court to issue a stay, suspending marriages by LGBTQ couples in Utah pending the state’s appeal of a lower court’s decision striking down Utah’s ban on marriage equality.
“Over the past few weeks, America has witnessed an outpouring of love, commitment, and excitement from the hundreds of families with LGBTQ parents in Utah,” said Gabriel Blau, Executive Director. “In the short time where marriage equality was a reality, families from all over the state have come out to demonstrate their commitment to their families and communities. Long lines at the marriage counter and joyous images of the marriages that took place clearly illustrate the love that exists in all families. While this ruling is a temporary setback for our families in Utah, we are hopeful that love and justice will prevail in the end.”
