In an historic appointment, Dr. Levine becomes the first out trans person nominated for a Senate-confirmed position
Washington, DC – In response to President-elect Joe Biden’s historic nomination of Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine to the U.S. Assistant Secretary of Health, Family Equality releases the following statement:
“Family Equality applauds President-elect Joe Biden’s nomination of Dr. Rachel Levine as Assistant Secretary of Health, and we join our community in standing with her for the confirmation fight ahead.
“As the current Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Dr. Levine has expertly guided the sixth most populous state through the pandemic, and her years of experience will help us ensure that our government can serve our families in this critical moment and beyond.
“With her nomination, Dr. Levine becomes the first out transgender person to be nominated for a Senate-confirmed position. This groundbreaking nomination exemplifies President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’s determination to put the most qualified individuals at the helm of our nation’s work, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We urge the US Senate to follow the Biden administration’s lead by moving forward with a speedy confirmation of Dr. Levine’s nomination so we can continue the real, challenging work of containing this pandemic and meeting the urgent needs of our nation’s diverse families.”
