Three dozen LGBTQ+ families were invited to the nation’s capital for an annual event with the Biden Administration
Washington, D.C. – Today, more than 30 LGBTQ+ families were invited to join Family Equality at the White House for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. Family Equality has brought LGBTQ+ families to the White House Easter Egg Roll since 2006, although participation has been stalled in recent years during the Trump administration and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“At a time when we are seeing a flurry of dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ bills across the country, the White House’s invitation to our families is a much-needed boost to our fight for equality,” said Stacey Stevenson, CEO of Family Equality. “Ensuring that families like mine are visible at such an iconic American event is a clear reminder to states like Texas who are seeking to punish and erase our existence: We will not be ashamed of who we are or whom we love. Our families are gifts to be celebrated. We are grateful to the Biden Administration for this amazing opportunity.”
“In the few short months of 2022, we have seen hundreds of legislative attacks on our families in states across the country,” said Shelbi Day, Chief Policy Officer. “As an LGBTQ+ parent and a longtime advocate in this work, it is a joy to be able to have my children, alongside other LGBTQ+ families, be affirmed and celebrated by the Biden Administration.”
This year, the Family Equality supporters that join the festivities will include single parents; transgender and nonbinary families; families from states like Florida and Texas; families built through adoption, foster care, and assisted reproductive technology; and families from other historically marginalized communities.
According to the White House Historical Association, the Easter Egg Roll, held on the South Lawn, is one of the oldest annual events in White House history, hosted every Easter Monday since 1878. Click here to learn more.
