Ban on Marriage for Same-Sex Couples Ruled Unconstitutional
Washington, DC, March 21, 2014-Family Equality Council, the national organization which connects, supports, and represents the three million parents with parents who are Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer in the United States and their six million children of all ages, applauded today’s landmark decision by U.S. District Court Judge Bernard Friedman, who ruled the Michigan ban on marriage for same-sex couples unconstitutional.
“We’re elated that thousands of loving, committed, same-sex couples in the state of Michigan have moved a step further towards gaining vital protections for their families,” said Executive Director, Gabriel Blau. “Opponents of marriage equality, in this case, tried to use the same old so-called ‘studies’ to suggest that our children would be better off being raised by different-sex parents. We know better and the decision, in this case, reflects that Judge Friedman agreed. We know that it is not what our families look like that is important; it is the love and stability we provide to our children. This ruling is yet another reminder that equality is on the march across this nation and the momentum is only growing.”
