To oppose the Title IX protections for LGBTQI+ rules is to oppose the very notion that all families have the right to be free from bullying, discrimination, and harassment
New York, NY — Family Equality vehemently condemns the recent House resolution to reverse the Biden Administration’s Title IX protections for LGBTQI+ students and families. Though it is unlikely that this resolution will be affirmed in the Senate, this vote is a direct attack on the dignity and rights of LGBTQ+ students across the nation. To oppose these rules is to oppose the very notion that all families have the right to be free from bullying, discrimination, and harassment.
Title IX, a critical civil rights law, has been a cornerstone in protecting students from discrimination based on sex, including gender identity. In addition to the House vote, recent judicial decisions pausing the enforcement of these essential protections in fourteen states exacerbate the vulnerability of LGBTQI+ students.
“Title IX protections are fundamental to ensuring that all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, have the opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive environment,” said Nikhil Vashee, Director of Education Law and Policy at Family Equality. “Right now it is more important than ever that students, families, and educators file Title IX complaints. Though some politicians believe that it is ok to bully and harass children, it is important to remember that we have the power to protect our kids.”
Family Equality urges all students, parents, and allies to remain vigilant and proactive. It is crucial to continue filing Title IX complaints to address and document instances of discrimination, even amidst this challenging legal landscapes. These actions are vital in holding educational institutions accountable and preserving the progress we have made toward equality.
