Family Equality Condemns House Passage of the Federal Trans and Intersex Sports Ban

Washington, D.C. On Thursday, April 20, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 734, a bill that would exclude transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people from athletics programs in schools nationwide. As it now heads to the Senate, Family Equality released the following statement:

“Amid an unrelenting stream of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation targeting youth and families, we are outraged at yesterday’s vote. H.R. 734 is a cruel and exclusionary bill that would deny trans, nonbinary, and intersex youth the opportunity to experience the pride and joy of teamwork — in addition to policing the bodies of all girls in sports, an act which has dangerous consequences for our fundamental right to privacy.

“We are grateful for every representative who voted against this discriminatory ban and we now call on the Senate to reject this bill outright.

“To all the trans, nonbinary, and intersex youth impacted by today’s news, know this: You’re not alone. There is a movement of powerful advocates, allies, and organizations fighting for your right to live, learn, grow, thrive, and play. We won’t stop until everyone has an equal opportunity to be a part of a team where they feel like they belong.”
