The event, led by the Drum Major Institute and the National Action Network, recognizes the 60th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legendary March on Washington by calling America to continue the fight for justice and equality
Washington, D.C. — This Saturday, Family Equality CEO Stacey Stevenson will speak at the historic 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington alongside prominent movement leaders including March convenors Rev. Al Sharpton and members of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s family. As a Community Partner for the event, Family Equality, the leading national organization for current and future families, will also welcome 65 LGBTQ+ families from 22 states and Washington, D.C. to participate.
“Nearly 60 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called us all to unite, resist, and fight against injustice,” says Family Equality CEO Stacey Stevenson. “And 60 years later, we’re still fighting injustice. We’re still fighting discrimination. We’re still fighting racism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-semitism, xenophobia, classism, and more.
“As a queer Black mom raising twin 9-year-old boys with my wife, I’m marching for all the families like mine who have lived somewhere that is actively legislating oppression. I’m marching for all the families I’ve met in my time as CEO who are scared, unsure, and more determined than ever to protect their rights to love, family, and freedom. The historic nature of this moment isn’t lost on me. Now more than ever, we need to come together to protect marginalized communities and resurrect our democracy. It all starts this Saturday, and I’m honored to play a part in it.”
This year, more than 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been introduced in states across the country. Families of various identities, socioeconomic statuses, religions, races, ethnicities, and geographies have been attacked by state legislators, policymakers, and even the Supreme Court. The 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington provides an important opportunity to reflect on how far the movement for equality has come in the six decades since the first March on Washington — and acts as a reminder of how much further we have to go.
