Religious Exemptions

There are bills on the state and federal levels that, if enacted, would allow religion to be used as a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people. These bills come in a variety of forms, but they all aim to prevent punitive measures in the event that a discriminatory act has been committed by an individual or institution based on personally held beliefs. The result is that these individuals and institutions are legally protected in denying services to LGBTQ people. Of most concern for families, there are a number of bills that would allow for child welfare agencies to refuse to place children with LGBTQ parents, creating obstacles not only for the parents who would like to welcome a child into their home, but also for the child who needs a forever family.
