In June 2022, the Supreme Court issued a ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that overturned fifty years of precedent first established in Roe v. Wade. Among other concerns, the language in the Court’s opinion signaled looming threats to other freedoms such as marriage equality.
In response, Family Equality partnered with movement organizations to advocate for the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act (RMA), a law that:
- Formally repeals the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)
- Ensures that federal law continues to recognize marriage equality no matter what the future holds
The bipartisan bill passed in December 2023, supported by pro-equality legislators including Senator Tammy Baldwin, Senator Rob Portman, Senator Thom Tillis, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and many more bill cosponsors.
