Word on the street is that Mary Beth Maxwell, a
lesbian mother, supporter of Family Equality Council and Executive
Director of American Rights at Work, is on the short list
for Secretary of Labor. If appointed, she would be the first out
gay cabinet member in history! And she’s a mom!

Maxwell has a long history advocating for workers’ rights and the
respect of her colleagues in labor and Congress. Other major
contenders for the job are Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and
Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
The Obama transition team is mum on the issue, as it has been,
officially, on all other appointments not formally announced. The
buzz around Maxwell appears to have started at the Wall Street Journal.
While Family Equality Council cannot endorse candidates of any
kind, we are extremely interested in Maxwell’s candidacy, wish her
the best of luck, and will monitor this process closely. Should any
coverage of her possible nomination turn negative toward our
families, we will be there to respond.
