WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today the “Fairness for All” Act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Rev. Stan J. Sloan, CEO of Family Equality, made the following statement in response to the bill introduction:
“This bill is significant insofar as it represents an acknowledgment on the part of some religious and conservative leaders that LGBTQ+ people face unfair discrimination in the United States, and that such discrimination should be addressed by Congress.
For the first time, a large coalition of conservative religious voices is on record affirming that everyone in the United States should be protected from violence, harassment, and discrimination by Federal civil rights laws, including such actions based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We welcome these conservative voices in joining the majority of Americans who share this belief across political parties, religious beliefs, and backgrounds.
Family Equality believes LGBTQ+ people and their children deserve the strongest and most comprehensive protections possible under Federal civil rights law, and to that end will continue to advocate for passage of the comprehensive Equality Act, which has already passed the House with bipartisan support, as Congress considers how to best ensure LGBTQ+ people are protected from discrimination.”
