Night at the Pier Gala builds support for Family Equality Council’s work towards lived and legal equality for LGBTQ families.
NEW YORK — Family Equality Council, the nation’s leading organization for LGBTQ families and those who wish to form them, is delighted to announce the honorees for the 10th Annual Night at the Pier Gala, to be held at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers in New York on May 6.
At the Night at the Pier Gala, Family Equality Council celebrates LGBTQ families and those who have made forming our families possible. This year Family Equality Council is proud to honor Scott Ellis and Sergio Trujillo, two leading professionals on Broadway who are gay parents and have raised the visibility of LGBTQ families and explored gay parenthood through their work on stage. Kim Bergman will be honored with the Hostetter-Habib Family Award for her decades of work to make family formation a reality for thousands of LGBTQ people.
“We are pleased to honor two dear friends and gay parents, eight-time Tony nominee Scott Ellis, and trailblazing choreographer Sergio Trujillo, whose visible presence as gay parents in the Broadway community helps raise the profile of LGBTQ families,” said The Rev. Stan J. Sloan, CEO of Family Equality Council. “Kim Bergman has a decades-long track record supporting prospective LGBTQ parents, helping make family a dream come true for thousands in our community. We are delighted to recognize her achievements and her longstanding commitment to Family Equality Council with the Hostetter-Habib Family Award, and to celebrate the launch of her new book.”
Scott Ellis is a prolific TV and stage director, receiving multiple Tony Award nominations for directing, and winning the Oliver Award for Best Director, Musical, for She Loves Me. He is currently represented on Broadway with Tootsie and Kiss Me Kate. Ellis’ work also explores his personal experience of LGBTQ parenting, as director of the 2015 show Dada Woof, Papa Hot. Ellis started his parenthood journey as a single parent to twins conceived through surrogacy, whom he is now raising with his husband Scott Drummond in New York City.
Sergio Trujillo is an internationally-recognized choreographer and has been a long-standing presence in the Broadway community, first as a performer starting in 1989, and making his choreographic debut in 2005. Trujillo received a Tony nomination for On Your Feet and the Oliver Award for Memphis, and is currently represented on Broadway with Ain’t Too Proud. Trujillo was born in Colombia, grew up in Canada, and now lives in New York City with his husband, actor Jack Noseworthy. Trujillo and Noseworthy welcomed their son Lucas through adoption in March of 2018.
Kim Bergman, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist who has specialized in the area of gay and lesbian parenting, parenting by choice, and third-party assisted reproduction for nearly three decades. She is a senior partner at Growing Generations, and author of Your Future Family: The Essential Guide to Assisted Reproduction, to be released May 1.
The 2019 Night at the Pier Gala Honorary Chairs are Daryl Roth and Nick Scandalios, and this year’s event chairs are Luigi Caiola, Merritt Johnson, Samantha Lippitt, Primavera Salvá, and Jason Weinberg. This year’s event is produced by Bruce Cohen and Frank Bua serves as the Auction Chair.
