WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today Family Equality Council chief policy officer Denise Brogan-Kator issued the following statement in response to the announcement that Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley intends to hold hearings on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court starting September 4, 2018:
“The importance of the Senate’s role in advising and consenting to a President’s nominee to the Supreme Court cannot be overstated. The process is generally methodical and thoughtful, to examine a nominee’s history and writings in order to ensure that he or she is well suited to a lifetime appointment to the nation’s highest court, a co-equal branch of our government. The rushed hearing timeline announced by Chairman Grassley allows no time for the National Archives to review and release the records of this nominee’s body of writings, and deprives the Senate and the American people of the opportunity to fully understand the impact that this nominee would have on American life for generations. This is a shameful, highly partisan approach and we condemn it.”
