Boston, MA – (July 12, 2013) - Family Equality Council, the national organization that connects, supports, and represents the three million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) parents and their six million children, will be hosting the 18th annual Family Week to be held from, Saturday, Aug. 3rd to Saturday, Aug. 10th in Provincetown, MA.
The week-long celebration of parents who are LGBT, their children, extended families, and friends are the LGBT family community’s longest-running and largest gathering of its kind.
“Family Week is a time for parents and children alike to renew and create friendships and connections that will last a lifetime,” said Family Equality Council’s Director of Programs, Brent Wright: “This year, we expect more than 500 families from not only locations across the country but from around the world to join us.”
Wright added that some families have indicated they will even use the Week to marry in Massachusetts or renew their vows in celebration of the recent historic Supreme Court decisions to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and dismiss California’s Proposition 8 case.
“This year we are particularly excited to celebrate the amazing progress we have made toward ensuring legal and social equality for our families and all LGBT people, “said Wright.
Family Week 2013 will offer many family-favorites from past years, such as the beach campfire gathering, the town parade, and the family dance, as well as several new ones, including a book club, a bike trip and a live performance by our Outspoken Generation member, 2012 X Factor contestant, Beatrice Miller.
Other highlights from the 2013 Family Week include:
- Trans* Gathering and Photo Text Exhibit –an opportunity for transgender and gender non-conforming families to meet others with shared experiences.
- This event will feature an opening reception for the photo-text exhibit, “Pioneering Voices: Portraits of Transgender People” from Family Diversity Projects on Monday, August 5th, at 6 pm with light refreshments available.
- This exhibit will be up all week, from July 18th through August 16th
- Fun Family Activities – Family Week features an entire week of activities for all generations, including youth adventures, arts and athletics camps, dances, campfires, happy hours, bouncy castles, film screenings, and much more.
This year, Family Equality Council is also working in partnership with COLAGE (www.colage.org), providing families a single-site registration process and making it easier for families to learn about and sign up for events and programs all at one time and in one place.
