Washington, DC – (Feb. 12, 2013) – Family Equality Council tonight praised President Obama for laying out a second-term agenda in his State of the Union Address that includes issues important to modern families – including the one million families in this country with parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT).
Family Equality Council Executive Director Jennifer Chrisler said the President is following through on his administration’s commitment to making sure the nation’s laws and policies reflect the rich diversity and pressing needs of all American families.
“Tonight the President made clear that every American deserves to have a shot at the American dream regardless of where they live, what they look like or who they love,” said Chrisler. “The fulfillment of his agenda can help ensure that.”
Chrisler added that many of his initiatives were a priority for the one million parents in America who are LGBT and who are raising two million children.
“Comprehensive Immigration Reform including protections for same-sex couples; common-sense gun control legislation; high-quality preschool education; equal treatment and benefits for all military families; affordable higher education; an increased minimum wage — all of these are important to parents who want nothing more than for their kids to grow up secure, healthy, safe and with the same opportunities in life as all children.”
Chrisler said Family Equality Council has highlighted other areas of American life where modern families need to be included in a platform entitled “Modern Families: Ensuring the American Dream for All Families.” Those areas include employment and benefits, poverty and economic security, family creation, immigration, family definition, youth and education, health care and housing. The platform was sent to the White House, after the President’s re-election as a blueprint for helping American families.
