New York, NY — On the afternoon of April 6, also National Student-Athlete Day, the Department of Education took an important first step in ensuring that transgender students can participate in their school sports program without discrimination.
“The Department of Education’s proposed changes to Title IX are especially important given the unprecedented attacks on transgender youth through discriminatory state sports bans as well as the harmful sports ban bill that has been proposed in the House” said Stacey Stevenson, CEO of Family Equality.
As Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said, “Every student should be able to have the full experience of attending school in America, including participating in athletics, free from discrimination.”
“We look forward to reviewing the proposed rule in greater detail, providing comments, and working to ensure that the final Title IX rule protects transgender, nonbinary, and intersex students from sex-based discrimination,” said Stevenson.
