Throughout the month of February, Family Equality Council is celebrating Black History Month by honoring the accomplishments, contributions, and lives of LGBT Black Americans, past and present.
Isis King—Model and fashion designer. King majored in fashion design at the Arts Institute in Philadelphia, and won an Industry Award for her eveningwear designs in 2005. In 2007, she was featured in the MSNBC documentary Born in the Wrong Body, and shortly afterwards her runway modeling won her a place on the eleventh cycle of America’s Next Top Model. King re-appeared on the reality show’s “All-Stars Cycle” in 2011, and continues to work as a freelance model. She has appeared in US Weekly, Seventeen, and in 2012 King became American Apparel’s first openly transgender model. Find her on Twitter at @MsIsisKing
