Last weekend students at El Camino Real Charter High School were given the chance to attend their school play, “Proposition 8,” but students didn’t just need tickets to attend. Each student was required to write an essay about their views on gay marriage in order to see the play.
The play, written by Dustin Lance Black, tells the story of the 2010 trial that overturned California’s ban on gay marriage. About 250 students wrote essays to attend the play, many detailing personal connections to the play’s content.
The legal case concerning proposition 8 in California is currently in the hands of the Supreme Court, which is set to decide whether or not it will hear an appeal later this month.
