pretty good
post-debate synposis from the local TV station that sponsored
the debate between Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) and Democratic
Mayor of Palm Springs, Steve Pougnet. Here’s the recap on the Prop
8 portion of the debate:
Both candidates also spoke out publicly for the first
time about U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker’s ruling overturning
Proposition 8, the voter- approved ban on same-sex marriage in
California.Bono Mack declined to express her opinion on the ruling, pointing
to the fact that she believes it is a state issue, not federal.“I have always maintained that marriage is an issue that is best
left up to the state,” Bono Mack said. “I have a record that backs
that up. I have voted twice against a constitutional amendment on a
federal bill that would ban gay marriage.”Pougnet, who is openly gay and married, criticized Bono Mack for
avoiding the question, but applauded the ruling.“My opponent actually did not answer the question about how she
feels about the ruling. I support the ruling. I supported the vote
of the people. I supported the first action by the courts. I
support equality for one and every single American,” Pougnet
said.
