Trump’s U.S. Supreme Court Nominee is Dangerous to the LGBT Community

After refusing for more than a year to grant a hearing to President Obama’s nominee to fill the U.S. Supreme Court seat left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February 2016, today the Senate Judiciary Committee held the first of several days of confirmation hearings Neil Gorsuch, President Donald J. Trump’s pick to replace Scalia.

We’ve written previously about why Judge Gorsuch’s nomination is bad for the LGBT community. More recently, we joined a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee, drafted by our colleagues at Lambda Legal, detailing just how dangerous Neil Gorsuch is and why “his views on civil rights issues are fundamentally at odds with the notion that LGBT people are entitled to equality, liberty, justice and dignity under the law.”

It is critical – now more than ever – that we raise our voices and let our elected officials know how we feel. Please call your Senators and tell them to oppose Judge Gorsuch’s nomination the U.S. Supreme Court.

Judge Gorsuch’s judicial philosophy is far outside the mainstream. He is a self-described “originalist,” which means that, unless the text of the Constitution originally included or has been amended to include specific rights, you have no more rights today than you did in 1789. We have made too much progress to sit back and allow the fundamental rights and equal protection of the laws we’ve fought so hard for slip away. Neil Gorsuch is a threat to LGBTQ people and other marginalized and minority communities. Please call your Senators today and tell them to oppose his nomination.
