Promising Practices: Supporting Grassroots Communities

At Family Equality Council we are fully committed to supporting grassroots communitites all over the country. We regularly offer support and assistance for hundreds of local parent groups all over the country, and we are working on an ambitious plan to strengthen and expand this resource for parents in 2012.

As part of this plan we have just released a toolkit for community support groups called Promising Practices, which is designed to strengthen existing groups and support families starting their own.

Promising Practices is the result of a multi-year collaboration with Center Families, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Family Services Program, the Lesbian and Gay Family Building Project, the LGBTQ Parenting Network, the MEGA Family Project and Our Family Coalition.

The toolkit provides strategies for several key areas of work with LGBT family groups including: organizing infrastructure, creating activities and programming, building community, forming parent and peer groups and advocating around issues.

This is a valuable resource for LGBT parents and their children, and it’s our hope that it can be used in every community where families need support. All parents want the chance to celebrate their community and connect with other families like theirs, while feeling empowered to take action on behalf of important issues that affect them.
