Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) prevents lesbian and gay service
members from serving openly in the US Armed Forces. However, DADT
does not just negatively impact lesbian and gay service members,
but it also significantly burdens their families. Lesbian and gay
service members with children are prevented from accessing certain
benefits they are entitled to such as health care coverage,
additional housing stipends and death benefits for fear of
“outing” themselves to their command.

The DREAM Act offers undocumented LGBT youth a pathway to
citizenship through two avenues – higher education and military
service. However, because DADT prevents lesbians and gays from
serving openly in the US Armed Forces, it is necessary to repeal
DADT in order for the DREAM Act to be fully available to
undocumented LGBT youth.
