In case you missed it, Milk won two important Oscars last
night: Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor!
night: Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor!
As wonderful as it would have been for Milk to sweep, the
essence of the film is the story and its subject, one of America’s
first openly gay elected officials, Harvey Milk. In that sense, the
film got the awards it most deserved, and in getting those awards
gave podium time to two people who spoke eloquently of the need for
full equality in this country–screenwriter Dustin Lance Black and
actor Sean Penn.
Dustin Lance Black, in particular, channelled the late Harvey Milk,
who wanted so much for young LGBT people to value and protect
themselves. Watch Dustin Lance Black’s moving acceptance speech
