Foundation

Boston, MA – The Family Equality Council joins
the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied community
in Michigan in celebrating the hire of Alicia Skillman as Executive
Director of the Triangle Foundation. Based in Detroit, the Triangle
Foundation is Michigan’s foremost statewide civil rights
organization and is a leader in effective, innovative and visionary
grassroots organizing and advocacy for the LGBT community. Skillman
is the first woman of color to lead the organization. She is also a
member of Project Harmony’s Advisory Council, VOICES. Project
Harmony is an initiative of Family Equality Council that engages
LGBT families of color by working with national, state and local
collaborators on issues of racial and economic justice.

Statement of Jennifer Chrisler, Executive Director, Family
Equality Council:

“What a great moment for Michigan. Alicia Skillman is a seasoned
advocate whose passion and experience have touched the lives of
many people and many communities. As an African-American lesbian,
she refuses to accept the notion that black cannot be gay and gay
cannot be black. Her voice for LGBT people of color and for LGBT
families is invaluable, especially in her capacity as a member of
Project Harmony’s Advisory Council, VOICES. We at Family Equality
Council enjoy working with Alicia now and we look forward to
working with her as leader of Triangle Foundation in the
future.”

Statement of Alicia Skillman, Executive Director, Triangle
Foundation:

“There is an inspirational strength within families of color. Often
that strength is challenged when a member of a family comes out as
LGBT. It is my hope that I can facilitate dialogues across identity
and racial lines to show LGBT families are strong, inspiring and
capable of bettering our world. I am proud to be affiliated with
VOICES and to be a part of expanding the inclusivity of the LGBT
movement.”

About the Family Equality Council
Family Equality Council works to ensure equality for lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender families by building community, changing
hearts and minds, and advancing social justice for all families. We
recognize and believe that the laws, provisions and ordinances that
hurt LGBT-headed families also hurt so many others—single
parents, blended families, families of color, and more. To that
end, Family Equality Council is standing strong to defeat
anti-family legislation and promote pro-family legislation. For
more information, please visit www.familyequality.org.
