Navigating laws and policies that affect LGBTQ+ families

There are an estimated 20 million U.S. adults who identify as LGBTQ+, and as of 2019, up to 3.7 million children under the age of 18 have an LGBTQ+ parent.

Yet, we tracked more than 550 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in state legislatures in 2023, many of which target LGBTQ+ youth and families specifically.

From dangerous “Don’t Say Gay or Trans” bills in states like Florida and Texas to helpful legislation that prohibits discrimination against families like yours, it can be hard to keep up with the laws and policies that affect our families!

Thankfully, our friends at the Movement Advancement Project created and maintain this equality snapshot for families like yours.

Parenting trans youth

As a parent, our number one goal is ensuring that our children are safe and happy. For parents with transgender youth, this might mean taking extra steps to educate yourself, advocating for your child in the doctor’s office and at school, and more. Read more about support

When harmful anti-trans policies began passing in Texas, Violet made the near-impossible decision to leave her home state in search of a more affirming community for her gender-nonconforming child.

Violet and Isa’s determination to find a path forward was the catalyst for Family Equality’s digital resource, Path2FamilyEquality. The tool, inspired by this story and countless others like it, helps families like Violet’s who are feeling abandoned by their legislators and in need of information and guidance.
